Chess Reimagined in Three Dimensions

chess3d is not standard chess with a 3D camera — it is an entirely new chess variant played on an 8×8×8 cube. Eight layers of 8×8 boards stacked vertically create a 512-space battlefield where queens command 26 directions, knights leap across three planes with up to 24 possible moves, and pawns can climb between layers. All pieces start on the center layer and must expand outward to seize territory. No downloads, no sign-ups — the game loads instantly in your browser on desktop or mobile.

The built-in chess AI offers three difficulty levels. Easy mode is perfect for learning how pieces move through the cube. Medium punishes mistakes and capitalizes on unguarded layers. Hard plays deep, aggressive 3D chess that will challenge even experienced players. Enable the AI Thinking FX visualization to watch the engine evaluate positions in real time, or use the undo button to experiment with different lines. All completely free to play.

Quick Play matches you instantly with an available opponent. Free multiplayer 3D chess, right in your browser.

What Makes 3D Chess Different?

Standard chess has 8 directions of attack. In chess3d, pieces can threaten from up to 26 directions — including vertical moves between layers, planar diagonals, and space diagonals that cut through all three axes simultaneously. Rooks slide in 14 directions instead of 4. Bishops command 12 directional lines including 3D space diagonals. Knights are dramatically more powerful with triple the jump options. Pawns gain vertical mobility, able to climb or descend layers and advance diagonally between them. The result is a game that rewards spatial thinking and vertical awareness alongside traditional chess intuition.
